In many countries, visas are not required for unpaid volunteer work. However, India is an exception and a tourist visa is required. It is available for 6 months.

BEFORE YOU GO

Who can travel on this Project?

Anybody between the age of 18-80 - regardless of background, nationality or qualifications. Volunteers are of all ages but on average, they are in the 25-60 year old range.

Where are the volunteers from?

Currently mostly European countries including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and USA.

Are there any restrictions?

You must be eligible to enter the country in which your project is based on a tourist visa or its equivalent. If you are not eligible for these, you shouldn't apply.

What do I do on a project?

You can help locally run short term projects in India's lower Himalayan region in the state of Himachal Pradesh or in the state of Rajasthan. All projects are education or child-care related. Examples of typical activities include assisting at a local HIV/ADIS institution, working with local teachers to teach English and Math, working with medical staff to assist with health check-ups for children or working with special needs schools, orphanages and homes for the elderly.

Are there excursions as well?

Of course! Local excursions are included in you program fee and are and important part of your cultural experience in India. Excursions vary per project but examples may be a camel safari, trekking in the Himalayas, yoga courses, overnight in a tribal village, or visit the world renowned Taj Mahal.

Can I go on a project with a partner?

Yes. Couples and friends are welcome. You must book early though, so we can arrange accommodation (where possible). Contact us for availability. If a project is full, we can arrange suitable alternatives.

When are the projects available?

Projects run year round. Himachal projects begin in March and run through December. Rajasthan projects run September through mid April. The Goa projects run year round.

Do you provide pre departure information?

Absolutely. We provide you a complete information booklet that tells you everything you need to know from country and cultural information to what to pack.

Do you provide there an orientation?

Orientation is a very valuable part of your volunteer experience and all projects include a full orientation in-country. The structure of the orientation varies according to the project but includes information on what to expect on a project, cultural practices, and contemporary Indian social issues.

How late can I apply?

We recommend booking 6-8 weeks in advance. The most popular months are like March, June, July, August, October. Check with your travel consultant for availability.

Where do I book?

Call us at 1300 651 639 or email your OWH consultant for a registration form.

Is it possible to extend my project?

Yes! Projects run in blocks of four weeks so you may extend for an additional four weeks based on availability.

Are flights included in the project fees?

No, but by arranging your own flights you have much more choice and flexibility as to your departure date and travel plans before and after your project. As part of Flight Centre Limited, your OWH consultant can organise value airfares, insurance, tours and any other travel needs for you. Contact your consultant for a quote.

ON THE PROJECT

Can I travel before my project starts?

Yes, but you must ensure you must be at the designated airport for your transfer on the required date. Your accommodation will only be ready for you on this date. Remember, you can extend your fully comprehensive travel insurance with us to cover your travels before or after your project.

Will I be met at the airport?

Yes, your airport transfer is included in your program fee. Your guide will have your flight details and will be at the airport when you arrive.

Will I be able to work closely with a local community?

Yes, we have carefully selected our projects to give you maximum exposure to local cultures. As well as sharing skills with the community, volunteers often learn the language and local customs and come away with far greater cultural understanding as a result.

Will I be able to travel during my placement?

You are committed to working hours set out by your project manager, but in your free time you are free to explore. Your In-Country Support Team will be happy to advise you on where best to go.
